More Great Ammo From Underwood - Questions

Hello all,

A few weeks ago, I picked up some of this stuff...

After shooting a bunch of it, I've started carrying it. I've read that it gets an average of 1000 fps from a 642, which is the fastest I've ever heard of when it comes to the .38 special. So is the ammo over doing it? I've seen some tnoutdoors9 test where a hot loaded underwood 9mm. came apart in the test media and over penetrated. Would you expect the same from this load? Would the bonded gold dot help prevent that?

As for shooting the ammo from an Airweight snub, it's got some slap to it but is very controllable and accurate. its like shooting a light .357 from a steel snub. I've always used the short barrel gold dots but thought I'd switch it up. Anyone else using this stuff?

Buffalo Bore and Underwood are number one and two best on my list in that order. Here is what Buffalo Bore has to compare:

"125gr. Jacketed Hollow Point. This is the Low velocity version designed to expand under 800 fps. It will mushroom violently and penetrate roughly 12 inches in human flesh."
S&W mod 60, 2 inch- 1072 fps (319 ft. lbs.)

The Underwood should work well.

Kind of wonder about claims like that.
Like auto horsepower ratings.
Maybe only achieved under special conditions with special equipment.
It would be interesting to check with a chrony.

The speer round most use now are a bonded bullet and underwood, BB and DT along with a few others tend to load to the max that sammi allows unlike most of the large ammo companies. Also what happens in gel test is not allways what happens in real life and besides if the lead part of the bullet holds together from a nice mushroon Who carres, to wound channels. Many loads today have been neutered for the firearms not designed to handle loads at there max. If yours is 38sp +P rated shoot away. Just know what you carry and what you train with can be different. Most of of use use lighter loads for most of our practice and finish with some of the good stuff.

^ That is one reason I think Buffalo Bore is so good. Real world chrono data from four different guns for just about every product. Underwood when tested comes out real well compared to advertised performance.

BB also as of late has been useing montana gold bullets in some loads and they also do not perform as well as many HPs in defence loads. Fast but not allways the best choice.

^ jmoritimer - - - thanks. I buy BB handgun loads that use a semi-wadcutter and a full wadcutter. But, I was curious about the JHPs they use. Seems that you have to email a supplier first, to verify what bullet theyre using before putting your money down.

I dumped DoubleTap because they switched to MontanaGold (plinking) bullets in ammo to be used for self defense.

I use Buffalo Bore's hardcast .357 load for woods protection against animals, but I'd rather buy Underwood's ammo for self defense against humans.

Maybe Buffalo Bore will send you a box with Gold Dots, maybe not? Their website has the following disclaimer, "Please note that photographs may differ slightly from actual product." So if they send you a box with Montana Gold bullets then you just wasted your money.

Besides, here is a comparison...

Buffalo Bore .357 mag, box of 20 JHP's = $27.94 + shipping

Underwood .357 mag, box of 50 JHP's = $28.17 + shipping

I have a feeling Buffalo Bore may lower their pricing at some point. Underwood seems to have come out of no where with some Kick a$$ products. I doubt they will every load up insane hard cast revolver and rifle ammo like BB. BB has so many choices. But what Underwood is doing, it is doing well.

jmort,

I totally agree. However, Buffalo Bore does offer hardcast loads in all sorts of calibers where Underwood offers none. It's not that big of a deal to me but certainly would be to others.
