My daughters boyfriend when to a man day event last Saturday, one of the events was shooting 12 ga slugs at 75 yards, smooth bore barrel, he said the gun shot 3 to 4 feet high at that range and had to hold under the target to hit the center of the target. This gun has had the barrel length shortened from 28 inches to 20 inches. No front bead on the barrel, just the smaller mid barrel bead. Barrel crown was trued up by a local smith.
Interesting problem!
Any thoughts?

The middle bead is supposed to be “stacked” with the front bead. The middle bead is shorter/lower. Cutting the front bead off makes the middle bead shoot high.

When we were discussing this yesterday, I didn't even think about the mid barrel bead height . . . in relation to the original front bead height.

Likely the sights then. That mid bead is smaller so it would make sense that to center it on the target, the barrel would be elevated w.r.t. the original front bead.

Some guys will add a pistol front sight and a 10/22 rear sight on the rib, or, just add a proper sized front bead and remove the mid bead.

If one is looking straight down the barrel, the bead becomes superfluous. My bet is the cut barrel wasn't quite trued up properly

Not shooting clays here, it was shooting slugs. He was aiming the gun and using the bead to aim with.

Lots of barrels are not straight from breech to muzzle, but the end result is fine as long as they=t shoot where you are aiming them. Once you make changes, all bets are off.

It needs a front bead/sight. That 2nd bead just ensures that the shooter has it mounted properly (in correspondence with the front).

I would just use the sawed off barrel for home defense and buy a rifled slug barrel to shoot a distance of 75 yds. I, I have different barrels for the 500. Why did the gun smith not drill for a front sight? What was the main purpose of cutting the barrel down in the first place. Home defense, short range hunting small game etc? Even if you want to use the smooth bore cut barrel for slugs and get a front sight, you are going to need to try different ammo to see what patterns the best.
