Is mink oil and/or shoe polish bad for gun finishes? What kind of long term leather care/contact is least damaging?

Shoe polish is wax, no problem there Old timers have used Johnson's paste wax for years instead of gun oil on the outside of the guns. Mink oil has lanolin base with some other thing s ,don't know the effect.

Olive oil works for me. Lexol is good. Picards works well. Kiwi shoe polish is a decent leather wax. I use Kiwi brown on my wooden grips to hide blemishes/nicks. I prefer Antiquax or carnauba content waxes for firearms finishes. I Flitz my nickel and stainless finishes. Polishes are generally NOT waxes. I should add that leather will usually crack when neatsfoot oil is applied. I don't suggest using it. If you are going to dye leather, check for alcohol in the dye. Alcohol will dry leather and cause cracking too. Lexol and Fiebing leather care products are trustworthy.
