Mini 14 bolt/firing pin question..

I’ve been getting some very inconsistent ejection and groupings with my mini 14. My chronograph is broken but I suspect my velocities are varying substantially. Confident it is not an ammo issue. Was thinking it might be an ignition issue.

I noticed that if I pull the charging handle to the rear and look at the firing pin it doesn’t seem to be under any spring tension. Tipping the rifle down I can see the firing pin slide inside the bolt. Tipping the rifle back I can see it slide about 1/4 inch out the back of the bolt.

Is this normal? I’ve had no misfires.

Thanks

Mini 14

Firing pin is free floating just like the M14 which was its inspiration.
This is not problematic as long as it is kept clean.
A clean chamber is very important in this rifle.
The pre 580 series mini 14 was not noted for stellar accuracy.
My 1980's era shoots 3-4" at 100 yards with the iron sights
