Residents turn in explosives, relics

By Associated Press

KALAMAZOO -- Wartime relics and other hazardous items were among those recovered without question as part of the police department's amnesty program for dangerous devices.

Ammunition from a 10-gauge shotgun and a World War II rifle, as well as several containers of black powder, were given to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety's Bomb Squad unit for disposal.

The squad responded to 35 calls from citizens over three days
and items recovered included: 3,200 rounds of ammunition, 10 handguns, 36 pounds of explosive powders and a German World War II machine gun, Hemingway said Sgt. Tom Hemingway.

"Usually, we get really deteriorated dynamite," Hemingway said. "That's really dangerous. Any little movement or friction can set it off." Friday was the busiest day, Detective Dale Epkey told the Kalamazoo Gazette for a Monday story.

Epkey said perhaps the most intriguing relic collected was a Shinkle grenade, which was a prototype grenade and one of four in the United States.
