Marlin 60 Questions

This is the best Christmas ever! A friend just gave me a well-used Marlin 60.

I'm an old guy but a new shooter, have only been shooting handguns for a couple of years. I don't know anything about rifles. I have heard that the Marlin 60 is a classic American .22, and I'm thrilled to have this one for my first rifle. Sorry no pix, it won't fit on my scanner.

I've downloaded a Marlin manual from the internet and read it through. I plan to take the gun apart to inspect and clean it. Is there anything I need to watch out for when I do this? Anything that's likely to strip, break or fly apart? Any tricks to putting it back together? I'm not real handy. But I am persistent.

I lock all my other guns with cable locks, but I don't see any way to thread a cable through the Marlin's action. How should I lock this gun?

This rifle has a scope mounted. I know nothing about scopes, but sure want to learn. Can any of you link me up with an online primer about rifle scopes?

Thanxalot in advance.

The knob on the top moves your elevation, the one on the side moves the windage(side to side). Most of the time 1 click will equal about a 1/4 inch at 100 yds. There should be arrows telling you which way(up and left usually) you are moving the crosshairs under the caps. Normally if you ever set the scope right you will never have to mess with either of those very often if at all. If the scope is a variable power, you can rotate the ring just foward of the eyepiece to make the image appear larger. I found this maybe it can helphttp://www.binocularsdirect.com/ssrf.html

Yeah watch out for the recoil spring (the big spring that goes in the back of the bolt), I bent mine the first time I cleaned the rifle.

If you do a search someone had put up photos and a big detailed disassembly and reassembly instructions for the Marlin 60.

I had that mechanism fall apart on me too. Its really depressing but luckly it wasn't my fault. It was my brother in law's rifle he left here and since I went out to fix it with much cussing and cursing and he doesn't care its now my Marlin 60 damnit. I had to replace the mechanism where a bunch of parts were missing but now have a really nice part with a much decreased trigger pull weight to make it nice and fun to plink and pest control.
