Marlin 44-40

Found an older Marlin Lever action rifle in 44-40 and considering purchasing it. Can anyone give me pointers for evaluating this rifle before I purchase it? By the serial number, it was manufactured in 1893. The blueing is GONE. The barrel looks "rough" but not heavily pitted (rough like you see down the bore of a gun that shot lead bullets and hasn't been cleaned.....). The rifling still looks good and sharp. It has tnag sight threaded holes but not sight. Stock looks decent, but there are some cracks around the tang mounting area. Owner said it was fired recently and at 50' printed about a 2" pattern. I'm looking for a rifle to get into cowboy action shooting with and the price and "originality" of this rifle makes it attractive.

Comments? Suggestions? Feedback? Worth? Things to evaluate for safety and function? ETC?

Thanks for the feedback!

Many years back I shot one of them that my Grandad left to my Dad.
Missed the &%$ deer, but enjoyed the rifle.
It has a definate solid, old feel. Should be great for cowboy action shooting.

If you take it deer hunting, practice with it first and keep the shots fairly close. ;)
