What is the difference between the 1895 and the 1895S? My barrel is marked 1895 but the owners manual says 1895S

At the Marlin website, the difference between the 1895G and the 1895GS is that the GS model is stainless.

At one time, there was a 1895SS. Super sport I believe. Must be a pre 1999 gun. Long 22 inch barrel? Blued?

yes its blued, 22" barrel, checkered stock (SO NICE!!) and the serial # starts with 99 so I believe that means it is a 2001 manufacture date.

Marlin has used somewhat different terms over the years. I'm guessing the 1895S stands for 1895 Sporter vs 1895G for the guide gun.

Could be wrong, but that is my best guess.

99 is 2001. I have a 98 myself. I bought it new in 2002. 1991 would be 09. You subtract from 100. The S is sport. It was made from 81 to 84 according to the Brophy book. After that came the SS. Interesting. You have an older manual.

Marlin redesigned the 1895 with a pistolgrip. The S was the first reference for that.
