Markings on military Beretta 92's , M-9s

I'm reading a mystery. I think the give away is that a murder weapon is a military Beretta as compared to a civilian model. However, are the service guns marked in a manner to indicate such? I could google it but prefer to play guess the plot point.

Sure, the military model is marked US 9mm M9, and the serial number starts with M9-XXX.

Both will say Accokeek MD, but that is the mfg for the M9 and the importer for the 92. The 92 says Made in Italy.

Hope that didn't spoil it!

Seems like the issue ones also have an NSN number on them.

Most of the ones I have handled have white painted rack numbers on them as well.

Also seem to think that NSN and M9 marked guns have been sold to civilians as special runs. Slides so marked show up now and then on Gunbroker.

Civil 92's are made in both Italy and Maryland, so (unlike the proposal from the poster above) that is not a clue.

I had it correct that the murder weapon was somehow connected to the military but the trace in the story indicates that it is a Beretta 92 sold to Saddam before GW 1 and somehow brought here.

The story mentioned a murder done with a captured 92 in real life as back story for their plot point.

Thanks for info.

Looks like the victim picked up some scandal after GW 1 and got shot for it.

It's a Harry Bosch book, BTW.
