M1 Crack

When I was changing the clip ejector spring in my M1, I found that the hammer spring housing was cracked longways between the clearance window and the open end.

I can't see where anything contacts that area, nor is it put under stress when assembling/disassembling. Does any one know if that's a common occurence, or how a part like that can be subject to any kind of abuse that would cause it to crack?

I have seen that happen; it doesn't seem to cause any problem, but of course the part is available and inexpensive.

True, I just put one on order from Fulton Armory simply because I just don't get a warm and fuzzy feeling when I see something cracked or broken on a rifle.

I wonder if it was a result of heat treating or something in the manufacture process?

Who knows? The repro parts folks are busy little bees and they have been getting into M1 parts even though there are lots of good originals out there.
