Been shooting an M&P 9L aganist a Glock 17 and finally decided to get the standard version. For those who actually have one, I've read alot and I'm not too sure what's real performance and what's rumor, so how is the reliability, accuracy, etc. This will be a 'night stand' gun that the wife can shoot. Thanks

I have a G17 and M&P 9. Both are great guns.
What I like better about the M&P..It manages to make recoil on 9mm even lighter than it already is.
What I like better about my Glock..It manages to actually have a audible trigger reset. Which I prefer.
In other ways to look at it though?
Camaro and Mustang.

My newest ones have been very reliable and very very accurate out of the box. Just yesterday my friend, his first day shooting my M&P 9c, shot the center 2" of a target out at 10 yds. And this is a 3.5" barrel.
Now to be fair I have one in queue to S&W for ejection issues. I won't claim their products are flawless. But neither is Block these days. And S&W service is hard to beat.

An M&P 9 4.25" was my first gun and after taking classes with it, competing with it, and generally running it hard I have zero complaints. It's been a great gun.
It's great, I've not felt the need for a more noticeable reset, I find it hard to short stroke a .3" reset unless you're only other gun is a PPQ
Recoil is very light, the trigger pull is far better than glocks, it's relatively slim (I can IWB with no issue). Have a few thousand through mine with no issues.

One little tidbit for a new M&P series pistol owner;
Bear in mind, that S&W paints the pistol spring/guide rod. Blue-green-yellow etc.
I tore my new, unfired 9x19mm apart & saw the painted spring,
.
It wont damage/harm the M&P and is a factory-production issue.
I soaked it in LPX, www.mpro7.com & was concerned but its no big deal;.

*M&Ps are relatively easy to dissassemble.
*They are decent out of the box with decent to good accuracy (there used to be issues) and a stiff trigger that smoothes out grittiness after about 400 rounds. Its stiff but has a nice release once thats achieved.
*Stainless steel slide, barrel, and some key internals. This is more of a big deal in a humid location.
*Good sized sights (no ever seems to talk about that)
*Very customizable if you want to go that route. You can get: a swath of differing sights; trigger work or kits to reduce the pull down to 2lbs if you want; competition barrels; smiths who work on the outside to change its texture for you; and probably a bunch more. Its not to the level of Glock, but not far off.
*Made in the USA. This is important for some people.

Yes sir! Have got them on all my Glocks. Waiting for my new slide and barrel from Glock. Should be here soon and on these babies go!

Consider a compact, can use full size mags as well.
I've had an M&P9c for five years now. I'm VERY pleased with this model. As noted above, the trigger on some might be a little stiff at first, but smooths out very nicely after a couple hundred rounds. I also had an M&P45 fullsize. Nice pistol, but I definitely prefer the 9c. Matter of fact, I traded the 45 a couple of years back for a nice Colt Govt 1911. I doubt I'd ever consider selling/trading the 9c.
