They (LR) are hotter because they're designed to ignite a larger powder charge in the same amount of time, pretty much. I've used rifle primers in pistol cartridges before, because I got them by accident and wasn't loading anything else at the time. They worked fine, just don't use the max powder charge and watch for signs of high pressure (excessive recoil, cratered/flattened primers, hard to extract cases, etc) and you'll be okay.
