I'm tired of spendind A LOT of money on holsters and I really like to work with my hands. I want to try making some holsters and would like to know where to get some leather for a reasonable price.

I get mine from Tandy Leather
price depends on how thick you get but still kind of pricey
It is nice to have a half shoulder around for projects and the half shoulders are cheeper $ 20 or so

I buy my leather from Tandy too, for making knife sheaths.
I aways have some around for projects besides sheaths.

I buy my leather at Tandy also. I don't know where else to buy it. The things I make don't have fancy carvings or stampings but they are solid and they work. Tandy sells some holster making patterns. If you are just starting I would recommend starting on smaller projects before going for the holsters.

I have been using Tandy for years but backed off every time they raise their prices. You need to Google it and ask for "Leather Craft" Here are just a few placed I have bookmarked. By the way, great hobbie but might add that there is an initial investment on tools and supplies. Also do not exclude Tanners and folks who deal in hides. Enjoy !!

For holster leather, buy double shoulders.
This is the very best part of the hide, the most uniform in thickness, and has little unusable scrap.

For a typical holster a good choice is 7 to 8 ounce.
Leather is sold by an old measurement of how much a square foot weights.

For experimenting, buy the cheapest you can. For an actual using holster, buy the better grade. It'll have fewer scars or brands, wrinkles, or flabby back side.
Before cutting a holster, use poster board or cereal boxes to make patterns.
By using tape and staples you can make an experimental holster you can even wear carefully to see if it works.
After you get a good design, then cut it out and stitch it together.

My father started making his own too! He used Tandy. He found sitting in front of the TV, Cutting, fitting, double stitching and some light tooling could produce about $100.00 Each easy! He sold them to people at the range and friends! Nothing fancy, just custom fit to the pistol and water formed. He would wet the leather and when done they would even show the Flutes on the Cylinder of the Revolvers. Once the leather dried, it was as hard as a rock and didn't need any kind of strap to keep the weapon in place.

He did inside wast bands, Shoulder, and side carry type. No two was alike!

People love everyone they received! He just took his time and it would take him maybe a week to complete one.

He did find that the natural body oils kept the leather soft as required.

I still have one for my S.W. Kit , and its covered with years of use. Scratches, Barbed wire marks, Gick and stuff. I wouldn't trade it for any thing made commercially!:D
