Long range shooting

I see a lot of posts about long range shooting, hunting, and military surplus rifles. Clark was talking about hitting a kill zone between 400-500 yards. I really started to think about that. I shot at 500 yards with both the M-14 and M16, using dog targets (About 3/4 of a mans height) and never missed at the 500 line. Never. You had to really watch it on windy days with the M16, but still not that hard. Most of my shots would have easily gone through the opening of a 5 gallon bucket laying on it's side. I was not exceptional, a whole bunch of guys shot like that, some with unbelievable small groups. What does the younger crowd have to say about that? Those range rifles had thousands of rounds through them.
