I would suggest Whittaker's Guns.

When I lived in Evansville, Indiana, they were only about a 40 minute drive. The place is well worth visiting, as they have the largest selection of firearms I have ever seen in a retail gun store.
Their prices are fair, and the people who work there aren't jerks.
If you've lived in California, prepare to be get a major dose of culture shock.
There were a few times I went down their with friends just to ogle the selection available.

Hey I work in E-town and live in New Haven. There is a good gun shop in E-town on 31W headed to Lousville. The shop is just past K-mart on your right it is called E-town gun. Not bad prices. Knob creek is an alright place to shoot and has some guns in stock. You need to visit the machine gun shoot the second weeekebd in Aril and October take the family it is a good time In New Haven at the Bargain Depot there are also good deals on guns. Another good gun shop is Biffs on 31W norht on the left befor you get to the Gene Snyder.

I am about 30 minutes from you in Corydon Indiana. Take 64 West to exit 105 (Corydon). Turn right off the exit and follow signs to the downtown area. My shop is small, but we’ve only been open a year. We are still in the “growing process” but we have good prices. I can only sell long guns to you since you are from Kentucky but feel free to visit anytime. We have a good bunch of guys who visit the shop. I’m at 217 West Walnut street across from the train depot. Indian Creek Hunting Supplies
Whittaker’s Guns: Take 65 South to Bowling Green Kentucky. Take exit 20. Go west. This will take you to Owensboro, KY. Watch for signs from there. Whittaker’s has good gun prices but makes up for it with his accessories, but it’s worth the drive to see his store. It will take you approximately 2-2 1/2 hours from Louisville.
Little Biff’s is on Dixie Highway and should be in the phone book.
George’s is also on Dixie Highway. Take 264 to the Shively exit. He is also in the phone book.
Ray’s Gun Shop: Off Bardstown Road?? He has an indoor range which is nice if you are wanting to try something.
Keisler's is across the bridge in Indiana about 15 minutes from you. (Clarksville) He's located in the industrial park area. He has a very large selection but his prices are outrageous. He caters to law enforcement.

Try E-town gun. They are very friendly and their prices are real good. I don't know how they do it but they beat Walley World prices on some ammo! If your looking for a place to shoot Knob Creek is good, you can also try French Range on Fort Knox (502) 624-7754. BTW, check out www.kc3.com for information on obtaining your CCDW permit. Russ: If you can get to Lexington, go to Antique & Modern Firearms on Nicholasville Road and ask for "Big John." Tell him his old friend from Wyoming sent you. I've bought dozens of guns from him. He's very knowledgeable, gives you a fair price, and is never pushy...a rare combination of attributes among gunshop employees.

There are a couple of gun shops in the east end on or near Shelbyville Rd, one is Oakwood Guns which is run by a retired Jefferson Co. PD officer, a real old time gun shop with mounted trophies on the wall and everything, and they just opened up a Galyan's that is surprisingly well stocked considering it is in a mall in the posh liberal democrat end of town.

Also, don't forget the bi-annual gunshow held in Louisville. Most assuredly worth visiting. I've been twice, and both times been utterly amazed at the selection, from antique guns to the most modern rifles and pistols.
The last time I went was two years ago, and I knew I was somewhere special when I saw
1)A US Liberator pistol from WWII.
2)A French 'Apache' revolver from the turn of the century.
3)A vendor dealing in nothing but P-38's and Lugers.
And lots of other really cool stuff.

Save the sales tax!
A lot has changed since this thread was started, to be sure. Bud's in Lexington is only an hour away from you, and they have a huge inventory and some of the lowest prices around. I used to deal firearms and know that the margins are real slim, so you can't expect to find them much cheaper than at Bud's. But what I did find is that Bud's has to charge 6% sales tax to Kentucky residents on web orders, but this doesn't apply to out-of-state customers. Fortunately, the same applies in many other states, so I started buying from Cypress Armory in Texas. Their rates line up really well with Bud's, some things cost a little more, some things cost a little less. But since I'm an out-of-stater buying from a Texas store, there is no sales tax, so Cypress is a couple hundred cheaper than Bud's on higher-priced items. You don't see the difference until checkout, but it's a little trick I can't believe more people aren't doing around here.
