Josey Wales

Saw it again for the first time in years. He pulls a Colt revolver from the ashes of his burning home. No loading lever and you can see it's got a cartridge conversion on it.

In the scene where the surviving Confederates under Capt. Fletcher discuss surrender, you can see a modern sling on one Confederate's rifle.

There may have been a trapdoor too in the climatic battle (homestead).

No way !!!

Not substantiated but while watching The Ravenant , there was at least three scenes that I just said; No-Way. From my perspective, just couldn't help noticing some discrepancies. I do this often and my wife often reminds me me, to just watch the movie. ......

Every movie is nothing but Hollywood nonsense. Eastwood's, even moreso. Movies ain't history. They're entertainment.

The real Civil War rather sucked in many respects. There were a lot of atrocities from both sides, but the South got hit hardest. I believe it could have been worse, but the Second and Third Great Awakening helped ameliorate state sponsored violence. The author, Asa Earl Carter https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asa_Earl_Carter was an interesting example of a human chameleon. He starts out as a George Wallace supporter and Klan's man, and ends up claiming to be an American Indian. The Hippie generation considered American Indians and their culture to be more spiritual (among other attributes). The Hippie Generation is still antagonistic towards modern society, but they love cramming their Social Security checks into Indian Casino slot machines.

As for movies, they are entertainment. Don't take anything seriously in the movies and don't believe in Movie Physics. Almost all special effects, from people falling off buildings, being hit by cars, will in real life, get you killed. Myth Busters had a lot of episodes where they busted Movie Physics. It is good that later movies getting small details correct in terms of equipment, but still, it is all entertainment. I recently watched Buster Keaton's Movie The General. Anyone notice the Yankee's are armed with trapdoors?

I recall one scene from Revenant towards the end where his rifle is either cocked when it shouldn't be, or not cocked when it should be. I can't remember exactly but it really jumped out at me when I watched it. Overall, very good effort by Hollywood.

In Josie Wales he goes from being a terrible shot to being the deadliest man around in what appears to be one afternoon of practice.

That afternoon was just scene basically saying he had tried to retire from his gorilla fighting days and didn't need much practice. It never shows him reloading either.

Wow OJW fought gorillas, he was really strong? Now THAT I've got to see. Just kidding, hope you're not offended. :p

Of course Outlaw Josey Wales is the greatest movie ever made, we all know that.

Several things made him special, he was able to pull a 1960 conversion out of a fire years before it was ever made. So the attack on his home, killing his family and burning down his house not ONLY created his persona, it was a time machine. That's how cool OJW is.

He also has the power to Border-Roll a pair of Dragoons, nobody's ever done that before. So, there's that.

He doesn't even need front sights on his post civil war conversion Dragoons, he's just that awesome.

Doesn't matter though, it's Hollywood, and the movie is still the greatest

I read those 10 mistakes in Josey Wales, and have come to the conclusion I just don't pay close enough attention to the movies I watch.....I've seen that movie bunches of times on tv and never saw any of that !....I gotta start looking at what I watch.
I never ever saw the crew with Eastwood in a white T-shirt sitting in a chair, I'm going to pull out my VCR of that movie and watch it ....realllly close !

Dances with Wolves boo-boo , watch Kevin Costener's Henry rifle's loading spring follower, it's always in the down (unloaded) position....through out the entire movie !

gwpercle - so did I. Now, there was a point made about being on the wrong side of a river, but if anyone ever saw a river, since when does it flow straight instead of curve? Could it have been on one of the curves that the sun was on the wrong side?

Dunno myself as I've never been on the Missouri River.

Also, Wales used a scoped rifle, specifically, a Sharps rifle with a scope. That was the arm some Berdan Sharp Shooters wanted to be issued. Civil War Sergeant Wyman White (2nd USSS) mentions using a heavy barrel Sharps rifle that was equipped with a telescope (vernacular of the period for scope).

I didn't know they had gorilla's in Missouri. I always thought they lived in Africa, I guess you learn something new every day......

Sorry, I just couldn't help myself.

Could have been a traveling circus and there were quite a few back then. Wrassling with a gorilla is mighty tough task. Heck, even a chimp can kick most men's arse and somewhere on the web is a video of a orangatang doing a tug of war against a Sumo wressler. The monkey won.

Missouri was not a nice place to be during the Late Unpleasantness. Even in Indiana and Illinois you had to worry about John Hunt Morgan. Like the Beverly Hillbilly song goes, "California is the place you ought to be...."

In the first scene where Josey unearths the gun from the ashes of his house, isn't it amazing that the holster and belt didn't burn up? He also had to get his powder and caps from town since those would have gone up when the house did.

Also like the poured pewter nose on the rifle carried by the Indian behind Ten Bears. It had a neat widow's peak on it.

gwpercle--I'm just watching Hondo, where the wife of the man he killed is telling him that he's too idealistic. Saw a fly crawl down Hondo's right shoulder (back). Am I watchin' too close?? :D

I had a cousin in the movie making business.
And it is a business.
There is such a constant hassle to get movies and tv shows made on time and within budget, it's a wonder they get anything correct.
So I give them a lot of slack on the details, especially if they are otherwise good shows.
But if I hear one more claim that modern ammunition fills the room with the smell of cordite...........

Re#12 Gary. Hard to tell if sun on wrong side of river. Most people don't know when you enter Panama Canal on the Atlantic side, you then go East to enter the Pacific Ocean. Sounds wierd, but crooked and bent Central America makes it so.
Josey Wales is my favorite movie, and have watched so many times.
Clint also costarred in Bridges of Madison County with Meryl Streep (I didn't see). Meryl Streep started in Sophies Choice , another favorite of mine.
Clint Eastwood for Vice President! And if he won't take it at 84yoa, then I want Sarah Palin. Both are straight talking, intelligent, diligent, and honest.
Clint just wrote, casted, produced, and starred in so many great movies. No one else even comes close. . Pat
