Picked up a very good cond yugo 59/66 for $299.00 at gander. Field stripped it and the bolt for a good cleaning. It's killing me I haven't shot it yet. I was pleasantly surprised to see how cheap 7.62x39 steel case is! This is my first weapon in this caliber. I will be shooting the bejesis out of this thing. What I know after research on it. It is apparently a 1968 production per serial number. Has the type one ported grenade launcher. It has the yellow colored night sights (phopsherous ?) It is heavy. It looks mean. Absolutely love it. Wish I was up on posting pics. Sorry lame. But happy member of the sks club. Thanks

I saw a SKS in Cabelas today for $499 I was like wow I remember when you could buy them for $75 all day long in the mid 90s even with inflation that would only be around $125 today. Killed my first deer with a SKS around 94ish. Also my first high powered rifle.

.19/rd. is found on Gunbot tonight, plus shipping: "The Ammunition Store". Excellent company.:)

Should still be a bit less than store prices If bought in bulk.
Gunbot is a very simple search engine.

Pezo: if you want to really learn about the SKS, are you familiar with the specialists at SKSboards?
They even have separate forums for Yugo, Romanians, Albanians etc. That website seems to be ignored by most SKS owners, who seem to prefer "hearsay intell."

I've seen a couple deals lately on wolf or tula 7.62x39 for $189.00 and free shipping. If you feel like buying a good amount.

I always recommend anyone both disassemble the bolt and clean it and inspect for negative sear engagement. Cosmoline will live forever in the firing pin channel until it is disassembled and cleaned. You can find numerous references of how to disassemble it. Once apart, take care to clean the firing pin and firing pin channel with a Cosmoline cutting solvent. Mineral spirits works well. This will prevent slamfires. Zatava built SKS don't have as much of an issue with negative sear engagement, but I'd still I've it a look. There are several videos or descriptions of how to look for this. Negative sear engagement can help cause a negligent discharge.

I remember first seeing them in a Coast to Coast store, one for $69.95 or three for $179.95. I passed because they were just so junky and cheap looking. A couple years later I bought my first AK 47 for $108.00 shipped, I had a friend who owned a police supply store and he'd get me anything I wanted at cost. A few years later after the big shooting in Cali and the first big Clinton crackdown scare I sold it for $1200.00. Then a couple years later bought my current MAC 90 for $122.00. Sometimes it pays not to panic.

Thanks. I was able to take apart this weapon easy thanks to you tube. The gas valve is in pristine condition no corrosion anywhere. Hopefully no "fix"needed. With the overall condition of the gun I'm hoping the sear wont be an issue. The best way to find out is when I can get back to the outdoor range! Can't shoot steel at any indoor ones.

Oh forgot to mention. There is trench art on the sling. I will post the foreign wording later. I'm guessing Slavic. I think it's a name and a mention to some incident that occurred over there.

The Yugos are some of the best.

Clean corrosion out with a blast of simple green. That stuff is awesome. Be sure the firing pin area is clean and well lubed. You don't want it sticking (slamfire).

Get a TAPCO 20 round mag as well, they work great and are far better than the low capacity 10 round factory fixed.

Do you plan to make this a defender?

I have a unconverted Saiga IZ-132 that I have been tempted to sell off and replace with a SKS but I think I would miss the Saiga to much and they are a bit hard to replace as of late with the import band.
Anyway, congrats on the SKS, I think they are beautiful rifles.

Okay. Trench art.
"Stanka"
"Arxhleist" not sure of this word. Hard to read
"PRIBOY"
"N/L"
"BAJROVIC" C has a small V over it
"Osmah"

Any guesses?

Also
I stripped the bolt and cleaned the cosmo out of it(thanks you tube). The firing pin seemed to move fine beforehand. But after the cleaning it moves much nicer. Just tilting the weapon causes the pin to move easily. No worries there. I agree with the bolt need ing cleaning on all new to you sks. I have visited sks forum. That is how I was able to get year of manufacture

Excellent. Good work. I got my first Yugo from my dad and it is one of my favorites to shoot. The Yugo SKS is a nicely made rifle, as long as you remember it doesn't have a chrome lined barrel and gas system. If you clean promptly and throughly after using corrosive after using any corrosive ammo you won't run into any issues. (Just about any surplus ammo including Yugo surplus should be considered corrosive).

The original Russian SKS rifles had a firing pin Spring, which prevents slam fires. People don't believe this about early Russians, but if they don't read "SKSboards", they seldom read documented proof about it.

Murray's, in Bowie TX can add a spring and do a number of professional services. He has a forum on SKSboards.
And to cure 'popped primer' issues (which can be serious), for a modest price Murray's "cured":D both of my Yugo M59 (59s are Not 59/66). Mine are C-series.

HistoryJunky: You must have seen my post (just above yours) about "The Ammunition Store":). Their 7.62x39 prices on Gunbot are usually the lowest.
