My Lymans 48th says on page 334 OAL for a 38 special 146 gr hp 1.408...all the others are 1.480 or1.470...I'm just wondering...but got some 140 grain hp and noticed the oal difference...

I believe that the 146 grain bullet is the old Speer half jacket bullet which doesn't have a crimp groove. the case is crimped over the front edge of the bullet. with bullets that have a crimp groove the oal length is determined by the crimp groove

hmm ?old?

well that might explain why i can't seem to find them now....so I got the 140 gr ...it has the crimp ring but calls for 1.470...to crimp in the ring i need to seat at 1.465.......I guess thats OK?....shot alot of 146 gr at 1.408 with out a problem....thanks for the insight... max
