Go to CMP website..

and check their eligibility requirements. If you are over 60 yrs old or are a veteran, you may be waived from the shooting requirement. If you need to shoot to meet the marksmanship training requirement, go to the tab called "Club Info" and click on your state. This will tell you about clubs holding CMP approved matches that, when you complete, will qualify you to purchase any rifle. You also need to belong to a CMP Affiliated Club, State Association, or even the Garand Collectors Association. There is no minimum score needed to qualify, you just need to demonstrate basic firearms safty and familiarization. Good luck, and enjoy.

Affiliated associations...

There are lists on the CMP site. Most state RKBA organizations qualify, as do many local F&G/gun clubs and some collectors' groups (like Garand Collectors Association).

As far as shooting goes, if you aren't exempt, you just need to find a club locally that's going to do a "clinic." All you have to do is fire the course -- no minimum score required. Make sure you get a signed, dated score card, though.

Welcome aboard!
The Civilian Marksmanship Program has PDF forms you can download. They'll tell you alot about the requirements, as well as some links to affiliated clubs in your area.

Ditto what JNewell said. High Power rifle clinics will allow you to get that portion of the reqs out of the way in one or two days, and you'll learn alot.

Once you shoot the clinic match, and then get your Garand, please don't forget what you did to get it. Consider getting involved with HP!
