Can anyone on the forum tell me a little bit about a pistol my grandfather left me? It is marked ".38 S&W Special CTG" w/ a 4" bar and appears to be nickel plated. I am wondering about the years in which they were manufactured.

Make, frame size, barrel length, type of sights, cylinder capacity, and serial numbers would all be helpful. Given that it says ".38 S&W Special" on the barrel, I'd guess it's a S&W since most other makers would either put their proprietary name for the same cartridge (Colt used to like to do this) or just simply ".38 Special" as it's apparently bad ju-ju to have another manufacterer's name on your guns.

+1 on Webleymkv's comment. My S & W Model 10 is marked just as described.

Is yours caliber marked on the right side of the barrel? When you swing out the cylinder, assuming you have a double action revolver, does it expose a model number on the frame? Is there a number on the base/bottom of the grip frame?
