IMR 3031

I have some .30 cal bullets 165-168 grains that I was wanting to load for my 30.06 I went to the web site (Hogdens I believe) and seen loads for 165 grain but nothing for 168s and was wondering if there was any loads not knowing if it was a chamber pressure issue in why there are no such loads for it with that particular powder. So I thought I would pass this by as redundant as it seems I called Hornady and they had no loads either. So some thoughts from others out there with more experiance and referance materials would be nice thanks.

I would start at the minimum load for the 165gr bullet and work up.

If this is for a M1 keep in mind that IMR3031 is the fasted powder recommended for use. Don't try to make a magnum out of it.

As long as you're not trying to absolutely bump up/exceed MAX, there is little practical difference between a 165 w/ a either flat base/boat-tail and a 168 with a boat-tail.

Most of the differences are due to OAL/seating depth effects due bullet shape/nose design.

Following is ALL w/ IMR3031

SIERRA 5th:
165 HP-BT #2140 (OAL = 3.185")
165 SP-BT #2145 (OAL = 3.330")
Min: 40.8 / MAX: 45.0

168 HP-BT #2200 (OAL = 3.285")
Min: 39.5 / MAX: 46.1

Note the above are all Boat-tails -- both 165s and 168

If I let QuickLoad compare Sierra's 168 HPBT above with Speer's 165 SP Flat Base #2035 (at Speer's suggested OAL=3.250")...

IMR3031/46.1gr (Max) and a 24" barrel
Sierra 168: 48,286psi/2,711fps
Speer 165: 48,931psi/2,698fps

Bottom line is pay attention to the OALs suggested by the bullet manufacturer and differences generally get lost in the wash
