IDF M24 Question

Can anyone enlighten me as to the purpose of the green tape on this fellows M24?

Is on 3 different places on the scope, as well as the bipod. Possibly to keep sand out of the cracks and crevices? Just curious.

If I'm not mistaken (according to Israyet.com), the IDF uses tape on weapons to identify the shooter as friendly, or something like that.

Judging by the location it is to keep the scope covers and sunshied on and sealed.
