Identical Powders

I read in the latest Handloader Magazine the Norma MRP and Alliant Reloader 22 are the same powder. I have read on here about other powders such as a Winchester powder that are the same as a powder from a different company. In these days of short supply of powder, it would help if someone had a list of powders with different names that are actually identical. Such a list will not come from the powder companies of course. Many such as Hodgdon do not make powder, only distribute it and perhaps have it made to their specifications. Does anyone have such a list? I am well aware the powders with the same number, but from different companies such as the two 4831s are not the same.

I think you also noticed that no-one is offering personal information. That's because no-one I know would trust any of this information without working up their load themselves.

Some may be the same powder in a different label and most of it is probably just close to the same burn rate. Either way, I don't subscribe to any of these links as being Gosbel and you shouldn't either.

Different brands of powder which are actually the same should be treated as different lots of the same powder. You should never substitute a different lot for an existing load you have worked up. Always drop back 10% and work back up to the same velocity as before. Pressure should be very close to the same.

Having said this, here are the pairs of powders I am aware of, from slowest to fastest.

I saw some "Accurate 4350" today.

I know Hogden has 4350, IMR has it, and A 4350 (and other names but this is the latest) this one is supposed to duplicate IMR 4350 burn rate.

On the other hand, I got some H4831 and it went from a nice accurate load (1.25 to 3/4) in 30-06 to all over the map (and adjusted for the difference and mid loads so lots of latitude).

Should be a law against duplicate powder numbers unless its made by the same mfg.

Hmmm, ahh well.

I have a can of H110 that has the exact same lot number stamped on it as a can of W296 I bought a few days later.

I'm not surprised, in that case they would be exactly the same. I wouldn't hesitate on using the 296 as a direct replacement for the H110 when it's gone.

Its fairly widely known that 296 and h110 are the same exact stuff with a different label for retail sales

Are the others listed direct replacements?

My (old) lots of H110 and W296 (W295?) are distinctly different; in color, grain shape and size, and actual demonstrated and measured performance, far from what would be normal with a 3% MAX variation.
