Saw an ad in field & stream for Gamo air rifles. The ad (I will double check if I can) claims to have taken down a 300 lb. hog with spec. ammo.
So looked on their web site and found a vid. But in the vid he states it's a 180 lb. hog, that's still hard to belive but here is the vid.

That video looked a lot like a domestic pig which looked very clean, well fed and quiet standing there to get its picture taken. I've seen a number of escaped domestic hogs brought down with .22 long rifle shots (and a lot of domestics taken out of the pen and shot with .22 shorts before butchering) so could believe it a doable proposition with a good air rifle.

From the blood pattern after the kill (though I couldn't see an entry wound) I believe the guy probably tapped this one right in the center of its forehead and I seriously wonder whether or not it was tied in place to prevent movement before the shot.

I'd hunt yearling wild hogs with a .22 but then the .22 has a 10 round magazine. What is the guy with the air rifle going to do for his follow-up shot if he misses by an inch or two?

this was shown on the hunting show "hunting university". it showed the host shoot a wild hog, 150 pounds or so, with a pellet rifle and kill it dead right there. he was only about 20 yards away but still impressive for an air rifle.

I will continue to use my Gamo to dispatch ANY hog... Point blank it is just fine for any animal. Maybe not a thick headed bull... 1,000 feet per second pushes them lead aspirin just fine.

Wow, I never knew.:cool: I thought air rifles were good for just rabbits and and such. I guess I have to start thinking about geting one.

Do a search for big bore airguns on Ask.com. You can get them up to .50 caliber and beyond pushing ~800fps.

I don't think you can duplicate their results. As posted above, the pig in the video was just standing there looking right at the shooter, looks like it was staked out.

There are numerous large caliber air rifles that will cleanly kill a game animal, but they are not cheap.

Scorch, my stock gamo shadow 1,000 has tanked uncountable hogs. All are pointblank needing butchered and never have i seen more than a second or 2 of twitching.
At the under 1 foot range it is equal to my .22LR for all practical purpose.

hogdogs, are you talking about domestic hogs at slaughter, or wild hogs? I could see an airgun as a kill tool under controlled circumstances better than a hunting (primary) gun. Or maybe I need to learn more about airguns! :D

Wild hogs for slaughter.:D Brought home and caged for a day or more to let the chemicals of the fight dissipate from the meat. By point blank I mean 1-2 feet.

That makes sense, hogdogs, as they're caged and not a danger like a free hog. What would be the minimum gun you'd take out in the woods for hogs on a non-dog hunt?

MINIMUM...:eek: .30-30 but I am very well versed as to where the heart is located since I stuck so many to dispatch them...
Preferred?... .30-06 or BIGGER!

+1 to hogdogs on the .30-30. My first hog hunt I took a boar at somewhere around 20 yds, shot in the shoulder and it didn't penetrate through the other side. Kinda surprised me. I still wonder when I see that vid of the guy with the air rifle. I can't believe it's only a .177 pellet doing that.

WeedWhacker, I have examined some of the hogs shot with my .177 afterwards to determine if it was humane enough. I found about a .199-.20 or so hole fully penetrating deep enuff on all the hogs' heads to feel comfortable with the method. I lived within city limits so gunfire would have been bad news and neighbors had already tried to get me in trouble for using the heart sticking method albeit legal...

Well now I am going hunting this weekend in a hog infested area. I think I will need to bring along my RWS with Gamo's special golden pellets and test this theory. I can usually get within 20 yard of the pork chops, sounds like a challenge. Oh I will be bringing a bigger bang stick for follow up if necessary.

t-bag, Is that RWS at least 1,000fps? if it ain't, it would be a mean way to injure a hog...
Considering I can drop a squirrel at 60 yards but the pellet won't fly 150 yards says that you only have 1,000fps at the muzzle. They lose much energy right away and 20 yards would be an inhumane shot.
I won't even use a .22lr at 20 yards on a hog. Not even for a straight on head shot... That is just me. Do as you see fit.
