how far back was it when they only used revolvers in the military?

also you'll notice that green stuff around some of the rivits, what is it and how can i get it off without useing harsh chems on it?

May be an old Calvary holster that would fit something like an old BP Colt or a "cowboy" type gun. I'm just guessing.

Also, I notice that you are using Photo Bucket. If you copy the IMG (I believe it's the last choice of the three) and paste that in your thread/post, it will show your pictures direct instead of just as links :).

It looks just like the old 1911 holsters that we used to carry in the Army . I would bet and slab sided 1911 would slip right in .

Yep, WWI or II 1911 military holster. Saddle soap her and then neatsfoot oil. Use brasso on the brass parts after treating the leather. There should be some faint printing inside the flap and an embossed maker's name on the back.

If the hardware is all solid then it could be worth $50 to a militaria collector if the other markings are clear and the stitching is good.

i couldn't see anything on the inside of flap but did see the faint embossing of the makers initials and date-(1917,r.j.m) there was somthing above those two things but couldn't make it out.
