How does one disassemble an 870 Express Tactical?

The owner's manual that came with it is a generic 870 manual.

However, takedown is both obvious and intuitive on the regular tube 870.

With the Remington factory extended mag, it's not so obvious. There's a ring around the tube, near the support assembly between tube and barrel, but it refuses to turn. The end of the tube, instead of having a slot for a tool, has a round hole.

The manual doesn't really explain how to take this thing apart, and I don't want to break it.

So, how to I remove the tube and barrel from the Tactical model 870?

Thanks.

M

Turn the ring at the base of the extension tube just like you would the magazine cap. It will come off and the spring will pop out (no spring retainer like on normal 870s.) The tricky thing is that that knobby ring threads on to the mag tube, but the extension threads inside the ring. This way if you thread the extension too far into the ring, the ring will not be able to thread fully on the magazine and will prevent you from tightening the barrel down fully.

Thanks, guys.

I'll have to watch the video later, and give it a try. In the middle of moving, everything's packed.

Appreciate the help.

Here the full details:

1. Unscrew the barrel clamp screw and remove it.

2. Slide the clamp forward and off the barrel

3. Unscrew the magazine extension TUBE. (Leave the collar on the gun for now)
Note. The instant the tube is fully unscrewed, the magazine spring will attempt to escape with great force. CAREFUL. What I do is to maintain control of the tube, and as soon as possible, get my fingers between the tube and grab the spring. Allow it to escape slowly and under control.

4. Unscrew the collar from the gun's magazine, open the action partially, and remove the barrel.
Note. The collar may have been installed so tight at the factory, you may need to use padded pliers or a strap wrench to get it off. If you scar the collar, contact Remington and complain. They'll send you a new one.

To reassemble:
1. Install the barrel and screw the collar on. Screw it on finger snug, then one more "click". The collar should be tight against the barrel support ring, BUT you should be able to get it off with just your fingers.

2. Install the spring, then screw the extension tube on until it JUST makes contact with the gun's magazine.
If you screw the tube on too tight, the pressure may cause the two tubes to misalign, causing a jam.
Too loose, and there may be a gap between the two tubes that may cause a jam.

3. Slip the barrel support clamp on and install the screw snugly. The clamp prevents the extension tube from unscrewing.

What has been said is correct. On the extended mag tubes, the tube extension essentially IS the magazine cap. Just know that once you remove it, that spring is going to come out, so be careful (don't want to lose any eyes).

Thanks for the warning...

I've launched bits from a 1911 during takedown, in much the same way.

Did a serious job on an overhead kitchen light, once, when opening a champagne bottle, too. This was before I learned the "wrap the cork in a towel" waiter's trick; hey, when you're 18 and trying to impress an older woman, there's nothing like blowing up one of her ceiling fixtures....

Cheers,

M

That's a VERY common mistake (and an easy one to make) when reassembling the tactical 870.

There's a ring around the tube, near the support assembly between tube and barrel, but it refuses to turn.

If you can't loosen the ring with your hand wrap a rag around it before applying gentle persuasion (channel locks, pliers, etc) to prevent marring the finish. :)
