How do I know what height rings to buy for a Tikka Tactical?

I'm going in to the gun store next week to pick up my new Tikka Tactical in .223. They have a rail mounted on them for the scope rings. I'm still trying to decide what scope I want to put on it. Just for this example, let's go with the new Mueller Tac II. So I get the rifle and I order the scope. I pick out some brand of scope rings that I like. I really, really don't like the look of rifles with the scope WAY too high. IMO, I want that front objective bell right down on the barrel. If a piece of paper goes in and out with binding, that's my goal. But how can you get that kind of fit without just doing the trial and error thing? You can't just divide the objective diameter by two since the material holding the lenses adds thickness. And I need to take the rail into account plus the taper of the barrel....

Now you can see why I'm asking for a vet to step up and tell me how they figure it out! And if you want to recommend some particular rings, I'm listening!

TIA,

Gregg

You can do the geometry once you get the rifle.

You need to know where that barrel taper is in relationship to the built-in rails. Then it's pretty easy to look at the dimmensions of the scope and get the right height rings.

The only wild card is the position foreward or back for eye relief. Optimal position will be different for seated, standing and prone.....

OK, but can you help me get started? I just looked at my new Graf's catalog and it shows a bunch of different rings but very few of them have any actual numbers. They'll just say Low, Medium, High, whatever. So even if I had the rifle in hand and carefully measured everything, I'm not exactly sure where to go after that!

I noticed that article I linked to from sniper central used Warne rings. Graf's doesn't list those. Where do I go to buy some and how do I figure out which ones are the right height and which ones fit the P. rail? (Is the P. rail basically the same thing as is on the top of a flattop AR? I was just thinking of using an AR scope I have right now for my first range session before the new scope and rings get ordered and arrive.)

Thanks,

Gregg
