Holster I made for my 51 Navy

A friend sent me some leather to make this holster. After saturating the leather with alcohol and wrapping the gun in Saran wrap I form fitted the leather to the gun as it was drying. Also clamped the edges nice and tight then trimmed it and double stiched it.It has a tripple layer of leather for the belt loop on back.Works and feels great!! Mike

Mike, as usual another great job.
I just got a couple holsters from the movie "Geroimo, An American Legend" military non issue Mexican Loop pictured on the bottom of page 31 of "Packing Iron" book. I Hot Water formed fit them to my '58's last night. They are drying today then they get olive oiled. I got to get some alchohol and try that next time.

OD, I'de really like to some pics of the holsters when your done.I always used hot water with my leather too, that's the way I was taught. Steve sent me the leather and suggested the Alcoho. It works faster to soften the leather and dries quicker.

Here they are the right one has a bit more detail than the left because of the ejector on the pistol, left side the ejector is on the back...DUH! They lost some of their "Black showing age" when I wet them, but I don't care. Unfortunately the loop covers the ejector detail.

They do not form fit like RK's, and being Non Reg Military they shouldn't, but they sure fit the pistols.
These can be found on page 31 bottom of the book Packing Iron.
The brass plaques read:

Timker, Hope this helps. It's double on this side and a total of four layers thick on the other side due to the holster making two layers.Very strong and the holster stays put!

Gary, The leather was a cream color ir flesh color I guess you could call it. It turned that redish color from the Alcohol I'm guessing.
I'm going to dye it a deep brown color to match the belt, cylinder holder and cap pouch I already have. Mike

Navy Frog from the TNT Movie "The Ironclads"

RK, I didn't mean to hijack yoiur thread. but here is the other Movie Holster I got
it has my Gunslinger in it, but it screams for a '58 Navy. it is marked: Navy Yard Phila. I have the Frog's matching belt and cartridge pouch coming along with the black scarf worn with the Navy uniform in the movie.
Now i need the Coat, Shirt Cap and Trousers??? and boots??? I'd be only the second Navy man in the family then....

This is a faithful copy of an original Navy Frog,(what the Navy called their holsters), right down to the two holes in the strap to accomodate Colts and Remingtons.

OD, Your not steeling my thread. The holster's is what it's all about and I for one wanted to see what you have ....you lucky old dog!!! :D Really nice holsters and a part of history.

If your talking about my Model "P" Jr. Your right. If you
like the feel and balance of the Colt 1851 and or the old
Colt lighting, then you would like it. It is about the same
size as the other two. I have not shot it yet, my arms and
hands need to work better first.

I like your “Navy Frog”. I am curious if the front sight gives
you any trouble with that type of holster.

I don't know I haven't had it on and haven't drawn the gun from the frog.....LOL I Don't think it'll hang though, because it's wide and not form fit so it should not hangup...Guess We'll see.

Soaking Leather

Remington kid,
I do leather work also, and I am curious about soaking in alcohol. I have always used water. Are there any disadvantages of alcohol?

I use to drink a lot more then I do now but I never did soak in it.

Might make doing leather work a little more dangerous.
I don’t think you should play with anything sharp if you are going
to soak in alcohol.

When I did leather in the past I always just used warm water but the guy who sent me this leather told me to try the rubbing Alcohol. It works great! Softened the leather real fast and dried faster than soaking in water.Can't say there was any drwbacks to useing it. I will use it again infact.Seemed to mold better and stay that way too.



Tinker2, Spent many nights with Chevis Regal when I had the money and was a little younger and "dumber". Haven't touched a drop in many years and don't miss it a bit, welll....not much anyway:D
