Anyone know how to get history information on Colt 1911A1's? I have one apparently from 1943 and it was Army Issue so I want to know if it was in WW2 or not. I can't afford the quoted $100.00 or so for a Colt company history, and the serial numbers look like they were modified or changed so I don't know if Colt will have accurate info.

Badd Ju -Ju there.
B of rot-gut.cigs.boomsticks & sometimes firecrackers (BATF&E) takes a dim view of creative serial numbers.
Best to have it checked out by someone via unofficial channels first.
It could be anything from the brief description.

The info I got from one of the gun store thick book 'o' guns was that the era of 1911A1's like mine, the government changed serial numbers on several guns depending on who was the manufacturer at the time to comply with military serialization standards. I'm fairly confident it is a legal change. The numbers look like they were burned off except for the first original digit and others were added. Not many criminals are going to go through the trouble of burning off numbers just to add more later.
