High-capacity .22?

Just musing over here, and I realized that I've never heard of anyone making a high-capacity .22 pistol. The tendency in larger calibers is to pack as many rounds as possible into a given frame, and I've only ever seen 10-round .22's made. Am I missing something, other than the (generally true) fact that .22s are not carried for self defense?

Generally people who carry .22 rimfire pistols for self-defense do so because they want an extremely small carry package--a requirement which precludes a high-capacity design.

One high-capacity rimfire pistol that springs to mind is the Kel-Tec PMR-30 which holds 30 rounds of .22WMR. While lightweight, it is by no means a small pistol and most people who would be willing to carry a pistol that large for self-defense would likely opt for a heavier caliber.

Hadn't mean to focus this thread on SD guns - I was more meaning that I can see that being the motivation for high-cap being emphasized on larger calibers.

I was just thinking that, were I a gun maker, I'd see having a 10-round capacity as wasted space in a plinker. I don't know any shooter who, given a choice between having lots of rounds in a mag and having only 10, would choose the latter. So... all you gun manufacturers who regularly read TFL... why not pack more rounds in your .22s?

The PMR-30 I hadn't thought of, but yeah, it fits the bill. I was focused more on .22 long rifle (though of course I didn't say so), but there's at least one high-cap 22.

Most 22's are plinkers one way or another. I use higher capacity magazines occasionally with my 10-22. But the magazines over about 20 rounds tend to jam or maybe I just haven't updated my mag supply lately? I generally just use the 10-round Ruger mags made for the gun. I don't get that much of a thrill anymore out of blasting 30 rounds off as fast as I can pull the trigger.

There is the Ruger 10-22 "pistol" which accepts anything that fits a 10-22.

I understood that the rims caused the stacked cartridges to progressively curve away from the horizontal, which caused problems. Is that off base?

It's the rims

^^TailGator pretty much nailed the biggest issue.
Look at most high cap rimfire rifle mags, they have a pretty good curve to them. It's more difficult to design a ergonomic grip to facilitate the curvature of the magazine once you begin to stack alot of cartridges into it.

It could be that the manufactures want to stay California compliant, because I've had back in the 1980's 22 rifles with 15 round mags that were straight with no curve and could shoot all day without malfunctions.

There's always the Calico M110 pistol with the 100 round .22 Helical feed magazine.

S&W makes 12 round magazines for their M&P .22 (.22lr version of the full size M&P 9 and .40).

The TSG Glock 17 conversion kit uses a 15 round mag.

Advantage Arms sells an extended 25 rnd magazine for their Glock conversions.

And if you own a CZ Kadet and are handy you can do what this guy did:

egor20,

I spent some time at the Calico booth at SHOT 2012 and was favorably impressed with their guns. I didn't look at any of their rimfires, but they had several of their centerfire guns there and they appeared to be well made. I was impressed at how easily the magazines can be taken apart for maintenance and also at how easily they could be loaded.

They seemed to be pretty solid designs.
