Have chance to buy 6 boxes of Herters 45/70 for $120. Seller not gunman,
doesn't know anything about the ammo, bringing it in AM. I know nothing
about Herters ammo. Is there 20rds in box? Brass any good? Is $20 box
good deal? New Ohio rifle deer season starting Monday, 45/70 in short
supply in these parts. Anybody fimilar with Herters ammo. Have to close
deal in AM any input welcome.

There are two possibilities, one is that it is very old ammo, from Herters (Herters was a mail order sporting goods business, who put their name on everything they had. They went out of business in the late 70s or early 80s.)

The other, and most likely possibility is that the ammo is more modern. I understand there is an eastern European ammo maker using the Herter's name. Other than that, I don't know about its quality. Sorry.

Cabela's does, but the ammo is made in eastern Europe...

I find no mention of modern .45-70 under the Herter's name...

If lead bullets then it is likely cowboy action loads (very mild) - good enough for deer at 100yds or less.

I have Herters in 30 carbine and 223 or 5.56, can't remember. Steel polymer coated cases with bi-metal? jackets. 30 carbine shoots pretty good in my ummm 30 carbine. Haven't shot the 223s.

Herters 45/70

False alarm, turned out to be 7.62x39mm, how that translated into 45/70 is
beyond me. I couldn't find any listed at Cabelas or anywhere else. I don't
think they exist.
