Help me with my dillema

OK I've got a Stainless Sako 75 which I just adore.

Right now its got a Leupold Long Range target scope on it, but I've got a Mark 4 coming.

The problem is that Sako doesn't seem to either make or at least have 30mm rings in low for this sized action (V).

Do I put the Mark 4 on medium rings or am I just better off starting over with another rifle? I know that the scope should be as close to the barrel as possible. Here's a pic of my Sako with the existing scope on medium rings, which I think are just too damn high.

No cracks about the brown sling - it's already been replaced. :)

Guess I'll just have to get myself a TRG-42 to put my Mark 4 on...

Try Leupold Rings.

I thought I remeber making Sako mounts. I know Leupold makes all sorts of 30mm ring heights. Go to the Leupold Web Site and see what you can find. Good luck.

Actually I just checked and I couldn't find anything. Good luck anyway. You can also think about adding a check rest of some sort to improve your cheek weld. Some people buy specially made pad that they stick on their stocks, others just use some padding and some duct tape. I didn't want my Remington 700 to look cheesy, but I wanted great cheek weld. So I spent the money on a HS Precision Tactical stock (pst25) with an adjustible cheek piece and LOP. It is a great stock and I like it a lot. Unfortunately they don't make one for the Sako (that I am aware of).

LevelHead,
Sako makes 30mm and 1 inch rings in two basic configuration:
with or without "pedestal",both come in three height:low, medium
and high.Your current mounts seems indeed to be medium height.
If You can´t find low Sako mounts buy low Tikka mounts and use
Tikka rings with Sako pedestals!!Rings are interchangeable.
I have Leupold long range m3 and low Tikka rings. There is 10mm
gap between barrel and the scope.3 millimeter lower mounting is
obtainable if You use Sako "two piece" rings.Sako rings fit to all
action sizes,it´s the scopes lenght or more precisely lack of it,that
determines if scope is suitable for that particular weapon.

knutzke, I'm not sure it matters, but the rings I want are OptiLocks.

I cannot find Optilocks in 30mm stainless low for a size V action.

Now from what you've described, could I order low 30mm in say action size III, then take the rings off and use them on my Action V bases?

At $120 a set its an expensive maybe, so I'd like to be sure its doable.

I was also told by multiple sources that Tikka rings won't work on Sako - is it the bases that are different?

Also are you saying I can buy just the optilock rings without the bases? That certainly sounds cheaper.

I'd love to get that Mark 4 on this rifle.

LevelHead,
Base, that´s word I was looking for,not pedestal!

You are right Tikka bases won´t fit to Sako or other way around.
But the actual scope rings are interchangeable,I have first hand
experience on that.Take look at Sako´s website http://www.sako.fi/mounts.html (Sako mounts)http://www.sako.fi/tikka/fr-mounts.html (Tikka mounts)
http://www.sako.fi/tables.html (Rifle info)
Two piece ring I mentioned earlier is #4 "steel ring mount"
Here in Finland It´s 20% cheaper than steelbase mount.
All mounts for centerfire rifles Sako makes these days are
Optilocks.Buying #3. STAINLESS BASE MOUNT / Tikka mount
would be best way to go if Sako mounts are unobtainable.
As a bonus You would have bases for your futureTRG-42..

Hope this helps,
Knutzke

Call me stupid but...

I'm Still not sure what the answer is. Those Sako tables have always confused me - there are no part numbers!

So is the Stainless Base Mount just the base?

What bugs me the most is that there is a part number on my 1" rings for the 30mm rings I want, but they are "unavailable" everywhere I go. Do they not make them? Just don't sell well in the US? -sigh-

I'm not sure I can buy just bases here, but I'll ask at my local dealer.

If I can buy low height 30mm rings in a diff action size with bases and swap out the rings to my exisiting bases, I'll probably do that (if I can't just buy the rings). It will cost me more, but it will be worth it to get what I want. Hell then I'll have the right mounts for my next Sako! :)

It seems no one in the US knows anything about Sako products - its nice to get input from "over there"!

Thanks,

Levelhead,
>I'm Still not sure what the answer is. Those Sako tables have always confused me - there are no part numbers!

After intensive search(mostly at my attic)I found
shipment list containing part numbers.Part numbers
for Your needs are:
S1701904(Sako steel ring base, for all actions, not available at stainless)
S170R910(Sako stainless base mount, for IV and V actions, low 30mm)
S132R910(Tikka stainless base mount,low 30mm)will fit nearly
all Tikka rifles and Sako trg but not Sako trg-s.

Letter R denotes finnish word for stainless "rosteri".
If letter R is replaced with zero it means same mount
but blued version.

>So is the Stainless Base Mount just the base?

No,it´s the whole works,two bases,two sets of
rings, two plastic optilock rings, complete set of screws
,two allen wrenches and assembly instructions.

Indeed Sako mount bases come in two lenghts short and long.
Short for I and III sized actions and long for IV, V and
trg-s actions.
