Good variable scope for Rem Mod. 7?

Good variable scope for a Rem Model 7, for 30-250 yard deer hunting, discount-priced no higher than $285.

A woman just bought a Model 7 synthetic stainless in 7mm-08 and would like a decent variable scope to hunt in woods and fields near her house in Central Maine. She's not a great shot, so she probably wouldn't shoot beyond 200 yards.

Criteria are: Good eye relief, large exit pupil, easy to turn power ring in cold weather and wearing gloves, good clarity, low mounting, bolt handle clearance.

Some scopes being considered: 2-8x Nikon Monach (new design), Weaver Grand Slam 2.5-10x, Burris 3-9x Short Mag, Burris 3-9 Full-Field II.

Leupold Vari-XII is a great scope for a little more money, but according to several users, it's hard to turn the power ring when cold.

Hope you folks can give me a little insight.

Leupold Rifleman 3-9x40 or 3-9x50 scopes are good for the money - $200-$300. Can't say how stiff the power adjustment ring is since I don't own one. Leupold has the best eye relief (and clarity IMHO) of the scopes you mentioned.

Eye Relief
Nikon - 3.5-4 in
Weaver - 3-3.5 in
Burris - 3.1-3.8 in
Leupold - 3.7-4.2 in

Leupold VX-I 2-7X

For $15 more than your stated budget, Leupold VX-II 2-7X

Look around, and you can probably find either one of these for less $$.

I have owned Leupolds for over 35 years. The power adjustment ring starts out a bit tight, but it loosens up very quickly. It's tight because they seal the scope, and O-rings need to be moved to free them up a bit.

I have a Weaver 3-9x38 on mine. Works good now that I have it mounted in Talley lightweight base/rings.
