Getting rust out of barrel pits

Hey all. I'm currently refinishing an old Stevens model 66c. I have gotten to the point where I have found some pits in the outside of the barrel that can't practically be sanded out. I am going to either leave the barrel sanded down and keep it oiled or paint it.

In either case, I would really like to get the rust out of the pits. What is the best way to do that?

Whenever I've had to deal with pitting and its rust on an old rifle I've brought home, used the Blue Wonder bore cleaner on it. It is safe for blue on gun metal, but does a good job on dealing with rust, killing it and etc. Mind you, follow the Blue Wonder with some penetrating oil/fluid and then regular gun oil on area I've worked on.

Also, an old trick in dealing with rust scale, build up, is to use the edge of an old nickel coin to scrape the rust spot. Metal in the coin too soft to scratch gun metal. This is an old trick I learned from a gent who's worked restoring old guns for a long time.
