Front sight fade

The small front sight blades on my SMLE, Winchester Pack Rifle,
and a few others virtually disappear against dark or poorly
contrasting backgrounds. Now, I like my SMLE but I'm not going
to spend $50 on a $125 rifle (except for the sling, ammo, bandoliers and extra magazines of course). So my question is
what's the best, inexpensive, do-it-yourself, method for making
the front sight visible against the widest range of backgrounds
and in the widest range of light. Thanks

Are the sights you're talking about big enough to stripe with fingernail polish?

Try puttin two small white (or whatever color you think might be best) stripes on the front post, making sure to leave the top bead black.

That way, you'll still have your normal black sight for typical sighting conditions, and a white stripe to help you see where it is in not-so-ideal situations. The white can also serve as an aiming point for longer shots.

I hate to say this man, but it might be time to go to the ol' eye quack.
