French Soldier Missing in N. America
France Says Marksman Missing in North America, Fueling Speculation Over Link to Sniper Killings

The Associated Press

P A R I S, Oct. 21 — France has alerted Interpol about a French army deserter who is known as a marksman and is missing in North America. A Defense Ministry spokesman said there was speculation of a link to the investigation into the Washington-area sniper.

The 25-year-old second lieutenant, who was not identified, did not return to class in September at the elite military school, Saint-Cyr Coetquidan in Brittany, in western France, after going on vacation in August, officials said.

Interpol was notified of the disappearance of the officer, a normal procedure, and a judicial investigation was opened, which is also routine, said Defense Ministry spokesman Jean-Francois Bureau.

Bureau acknowledged there was some speculation of a connection with the sniper investigation, but he said that was just hypothetical at this point.

"We have no certitude of a link," he said in a telephone interview. However, he said, "This soldier has a very, very good reputation as a marksman."

And since the Sept. 11 terror attacks on the United States, "these are things we follow very closely," he added.

Interpol, the international police agency based in the French city of Lyon, said it refuses to comment on active cases.

The deserter was given permission for an August trip to the United States and Canada, said Bureau. Police sources said he had planned a trip to Chicago.

RTL radio reported the deserter was of Yugoslav origin, but Bureau could not confirm that, saying that he had to be a French citizen to attend the military school.

After the missing officer never showed up for school in September, the gendarmerie, a force under the Defense Ministry, sent a note last week to the Interior Ministry. Interpol was then contacted, said Bureau.

Maybe he is pissed off with the potrayal of the French on the Simpsons?

Grasping at straws but I hope that the shooter is not an angry white American.

No, Bogie, not Algerian. He is apparently from the Balkans, Yugoslavia, but a French citizen. If he's a Moslem, though, thay are keeping quiet about it.

English not being his primary language would explain to me the peculiar syntax of the phrase, "Dear Policeman," rather than "Dear Cops," or something like that.

It would be to our benefit actually, if the guy responsible was this missing soldier, especially if he is Muslim, and not a "home-grown white redneck NRA member" as the media and certain Dems are most certainly praying he is.

The only interesting thing about the whole ordeal? If the guy they have in custody is indeed the shooter, and he is also the missing soldier, then what will the French have to say about it.

Did any of the Virginia victims die? If they did, this guy is going to be tried, convicted, and sentenced to death. The French REALLY oppose the death penalty, and I am curious as to what political drivel they will spew if we capture this guy and it turns out to be their missing man.

What a unique situation all around. Regardless though, here's to hoping they've caught him.

Not to spin too far out of control here, but the chances of being French Moroccan or Algerian, as well as Muslim wouldn't be too hard to believe. It would also help to explain the peculiar wording of the Tarot card: "Dear Mr. Policeman", which seemed to indicate someone who spoke English as a second language.

Sure hope they now have the guy in custody, and if the person in custody is this Frenchman, all the better. geegee

The article off the AP newswire at Newsday.com specified that Interpol believes the defector to be of Yugoslav descent but a French citizen, as he was attending a military school designated exclusively for French citizens. So he's not Moroccan or Algerian.

As a bilingual Canadian expat, I have to agree that the wording on the tarot card does read like it was written by someone for whom English is not a first language. The use of the singular ("policeman") instead of the more fluid plural ("policemen") also reads like someone looked it up in a bilingual dictionary; if you look up "gendarme" or "police" in a French-English dictionary, the translation would be "policeman", not the more colloquial "cop" or the plural form of the word.

The next question is when do we invade France as they are training muslim militants in terrorist training camps? Maybe we will just do air strikes. Can you imagine the Eifel Tower taking a 2000 lbs GBU?

That would be a real shame. The French surrendered so hard to keep their cities from being blown up in the last two wars.

Guys, really. He's not the freakin sniper, for crying out loud. If he was, he'd have surrendered a week ago.
