Forward Grip on a Pistol

Is it illegal to put a forward grip on a pistol? Would I have to register is as AOW (Any Other Weapon) instead?

I have the itch to have built a 6" 1911A1 with and accessory rail mounted folding forward grip.

Yes, this qualifies as an Any Other Weapon.

If you just gotta have it, that grip will cost you some form-filling, a couple months(?) and five bucks. But I wouldn't go that route unless it was FA ($200). For a cool AOW, I'd take a Serbu Shorty, though. TEHO.

What does BFG stand for anyway? Is it Biggest Funnest Gun, by any chance?

If you are going to have strong integral rail - just put a big SureFire or other light on it - it'll be just like gripping a rifle fore end

I just picked up an old Dean Grennell DBI book from the '70s, and he had a photo of some benchrest shooter with a double-gripped bolt action in there. Those were simpler times, no doubt - Agent Schmuckatelli was still in high school.
