How about a plain blowback 45 ACP loaded with a jacketed wooden bullet at 2,500 fps? That's the Schouboe, from 1907. Maybe we've come full circle?

I know! We take a 45 ACP jacket and stuff it with feathers. That should be good for 3,200 fps! Dick Casull take note.

i read a quote at sixgunner.com that went

"You could launch steel phonograph needles at light speed and show tons of ft/lbs of energy but still not be able to kill anything bigger than a bull rat with consistency."

Hmmmm...I wonder how much penetration you'd get firing that phonograph needle into ballistic gelatin at light speed?

But seriously, even something smaller than a phonograph needle, if driven to light speed (or near light speed), would do a heck of a lotta damage to whatever carbon-based life form happened to be in its way.
