FNAR hog/deer ammo

Anyone own an FNAR and hunt with it? Do you shoot the 16 or 20 inch barrel? light or heavy? What ammo do you use for hunting deer/hogs in this gun and what size groups do you get with it?

I shoot a 20 inch heavy barrel and I'm lookin for some accurate hog and deer ammo for it. Since .308 ammo ain't cheap, I'd like to find something that shoots tight groups and also provides adequate penetration and expansion.

I'd say anything that's within the rifles effective range would work.

If it works on deer it'll work on a pig.

If its a group of pigs, fire one round, get out of the scope and enjoy the spectacle of the mayhem that ensues.

I have the Winchester SX- AR

It's the same basic gun, 20" heavy barrel, 10 round mag. I use Hornady 150 grain SST. Works great on deer, pigs, coyotes. It's such a soft shooting gun, very comfortable and its becoming my go to gun for hunting.
The SSTs group really well in my gun (1 moa). The only things that has grouped better is Hornady 178 grain Match.

My 20" FNAR Heavy likes 150 grainers a bit better than the heavier rounds. The Federal 150 grain soft points are affordable, pretty accurate and still punch hard. The UltraMax rounds shoot great in my M1A but the FNAR grouped worse with those. At the end of the day, you will see every rifle prefers different food.

I found out what mine liked by buying a box of each and making a good day at the range trying 5 or 10 of each. Like i said, mine liked the 150s. Hope that helps a bit.

Smokey. What sized groups do u get with the 150 grain sps at 100 yds? You're the first FNAR owner who said their gun liked the 150s better than anything 165-178 grain that I've come across.

Check out Black Hills

I picked up a box of Black Hills some time ago for some testing in one of my bolt guns.

Yesterday, at the range, I ran 5 rounds of it through my FNAR 20" heavy barrel. The Black Hills did well when you consider a cold bore shot was included in that group of five. I realize that you do not want to hunt with 175 gr SMK ammo, but Black Hills has four .308 Win hunting loads on their web site. Nothing in 175 gr but they do have 168 and 180 gr offerings. I'll bet they are using the same powder in all of them.

I've also shot 1" groups with Winchester 150 gr. Power Point (from Walmart). I was using it to foul the bore.
