FN P-12 or Mossberg 590A1?

I’m looking at picking up a home defense 12-ga pump.

I am liking either the FN P-12 or the Mossy 590A1 in the 18-17.5” range. Both have changeable chokes ( I don’t thing the 20” Mossy does).

What experience do you all have with these?

I can't tell you anything about the fn, but the 590 is an excellent shotgun. My 590 does not have screw in chokes.
Sportsman's outdoor superstore, after rebate, has the 870 DM for sale for $219 if it interests you. That is a steal on that gun. It's a high end home defense/tactical pump. I have one and am about to have 3 more at that price

Thanks for the heads up, but I really have no interest in an 870 DM.

For some reason they just look to me like they have bull testicles hanging down. I think a tubular magazine is a much better look and probably less cumbersome.

I thought the same until I handled one. The magazine keeps the weight centered on the shotgun. Balances much better than the long tube 870 or 590. I also have a 590 m. It's an awesome shotgun as well. 20 shots in one mag is a lot of fire power. I also have a tube fed 590 and a few tube fed 870s. The magazine shotguns make no sense for hunting, but they are definitely superior for tactical use. They are non traditional looking, kinda like shotgun meets AR.

Bud's

Bud's (Guns) has a sale going on now for the Moss 590-A1. If you are anywhere close to their big store in Sevierville/Pigeon Forge (near Gatlinburg, TN) $369.00 seems like a steal.

I''ve been an Rem 870 man all my life, but recently the Mossbergs have been singing to me. I hunted an 835 hard this spring with no complaints. Picked up a used 500 & Mav 88 for HD and truck guns, for little money and am well pleased with them as well.

Thank you. That does seem like a good price on that model, but the one I was looking at was idea #50774. While the 20" barrel of the lower priced model (along with the extra capacity), I was liking the option to change choke tube on the shorter one.

My only other shotgun is a New Haven 600 20-ga. It's a Mossberg 500 (private labeled for Montgomery Wards, if I remember correctly). So controls on the Mossy would be what I already have. I will say the P12 I handled at the LGS though is much smoother than the new Mossy's I've handled-both trigger and slide action.

Even the TN location for Buds would be too much of a hike for me-about 2-1/2 hours each way-so anything I get from them would be shipped.

The FN is a warmed over Winchester 1300.

I'd like to think FN has ironed out the kinks by now, but it's not a popular shotgun.

On the other hand, it's hard to argue against the 590A1 if Remington isn't on the menu.

Like the FN P-12. Smooth action and seems to be high quality. Only thing I don't like is it only has one trigger group pin so it makes it impossible to add a side saddle that uses two trigger pins. Have a glue on Velcro on mine. No experience with Mossberg but I do recommend the P-12. The P-12 uses standard (NOT PLUS} Browning Invector choke tubes
