In 1965 or there abouts....
Swear and Send back (Sears and Roebuck) was marketing two versions of the M39 from Finland. One was in the untouched rifle version for 14.95 plus shipping. The other was in a "sporterized" configuration which was the rifle with the front of the stock hacked off. (19.95 plus shipping).
I bought one plus some surplus ammunition. The spent cartridge expanded in the chamber to the point where I had to drive the case out with the cleaning rod. (Trapdoor Springfield in the 1880s?)
Rifle was stolen during a household move

That sounds like the one I bought when I was a kid, but I cannot remember who I ordered it from. It probably was not Sears because I don't remember the ammo being available. I seem to remember it was in the back of an NRA magazine. I could be wrong, all kinds of magazines had mail order guns for sale back then. I put it in with some other auction guns about 6-8 years ago and it went for almost $400.

Without a doubt the finest bolt action rifle of WW2.
While the standard Russian Mosins were pretty plain and frankly rough, the Finn M39s were tremendously better made and accurate to the extreme. Easily the pinnacle of bolt action design. Great rifles, and worth a dozen Ruskie M91/30s.
