For those of you who multi-purpose w/ your 22's I'd like to get some feedback from your experiences w/ various .22's and the concoctions you use, and the experiences with their performance in accuracy and results on the game taken. I am new to "varmint" calibers, and know the time will come when a medium game specie will show up (deer, hog, javelina) and all I have in my hand is the 22-250.

I'm thinking the responsible thing to do at that point is let your buddy who has the right rifle take the shot. I can't speak to the subject in all states, but around my neck of the woods it's unlawful to shoot a deer with anything under a 95 gr. bullet.

a 22-250 will drop any of the game animals you named without much problem as long as you place the shot appropriately for the bullet construction. I know people who have shot deer with their 22-250, and hogs, and coyotes, and all you have to do is decide where to put the shot based on bullet construction. Light bullets, head shots are pretty much lethal. Heavier bullets, chest shots are fine.

Just make sure to check your game laws first to make sure you can legally take game animals with a 22 centerfire in your state.

Thanks. I loaded some 55 gr'ers that are going aboug 3697 to 3712 fps. It is legal to shoot 22 cal at deer in TX. Due to it's accuracy with that load, I figure a head neck shot should be a breeze. I'm using 55 gr. Sierra Game Kings, and I'm getting 5/8" groups at 100 yds. off a bench using towels for a rest.

BTW, my prefered deer gun is a 7mm rem mag. I'm having shoulder surgery soon, and the 7mm won't be an option this season.

Goo 22-250 load

I would really need to know the twist of your barrel. I don't do bigger game with a 22-250 but those around here that do use a 55 gr soft point and the favorite powder seems to be 35 gr of I-4895

Work up the load in your rifle! What is safe in one gun might not be in yours!
I would think that in a standard 22.250 ie 1-14 twist that Barnes makes their triple shock bullet in 53gr would be just the right ticket.
