Maybe I'm just a blunt ex-New Yorker, but I've never had a problem asking that question to anyone who may have done so.
If it was a problem, they said so, and that was that.
I relate this to people missing limbs or having some form of visible anomoly.
More often than not, I have found these folks very open about the particulars of their situation.
Almost to the point of being happy to discuss it openly.
Of course everyones different, but for me, if I shoot someone, I'm quite certain there was a darn good reason for it and I'll have no qualms about relating the tale to you.
I've had to stick my .38 in the face of a few "ne'er do wells" while driving a cab in NYC.
Never had the "pleasure " of eliminating some scum from society though.
If, however, I ACCIDENTLY injure or kill someone, by ANY means, that might be difficult to discuss.
I say...There's no harm in asking, so ask if you want to.
