engine oil as lubricant?

I read a few posts where people used engine oil on their guns. What are the advantages and disadvantages? I know most engine oils have cleaners and treatments in them and that might be an advantage. High grade synthetic oils seem like a good choice, since they stand up to abuse better than standard oil.

OK, we've had several threads over the past year on lubrication, with many posts debating using automotive oils.

A number of them have gotten quite testy, too.

I'm going to ask you to use the search feature to read those threads and individuals' experiences before we open up another one.

If, after you do that, you still have specific questions, then by all means ask those specific questions.
