I was in the eastern half of the U.S. and talked to a few gus about the calibers you guys use. What are you guys using and from what state? I'm from Utah and I would say that the fav caliber here is the 30-06 followed very close by 300 win mag and 7mm Rem mag.

I was in the local Walmart near Marion Virginia (southwestern part of the state). They offered 35 Remington, 300 Winmag, 30-06, .308, 30-30, .270, 7mm mag, 7mm-08, 25-06, and .243

No exotic stuff like 7x57 Mauser, 6.5 Swede, 45-70 or the like. Not even the .260 Remington.

I live up in Northwestern Virginia and the 30-30, 30-06, .308, .270, 7mm WinMag, .243 are very popular. About what you would expect.

Here in PA it's the usual cast of characters. 3006, 308, 3030, 243 etc.. Oddly enough the 303 British is always amoung the top 10 calibers used for hunting. (according to the game commission) 303 Brit is pretty easy to come by around here.

Actually, I'm taking to the field with a 303 this year. #5 customized by Ashley Outdoors into a scout rifle. It's a hell of a shooter!

Probably 10% of the ammo sold here in Md is 30-30. Probably half the deer taken with rifles are taken with the 30-30. There's a lesson there(G).

Also, over half the state is shotgun/slug only.

Shotgun/Handgun/muzzleloader only here. Rifles aren't allowed. The most common is the 12 ga. Followed by .44 magnum, but I did know a guy once that claimed to have a Thompson Center Contender in .375 H&H. It hurts just thinking about it.

Eric. Not a flame, but I don't think a Contender will hold a .375 H&H. Are you sure he did not mean a .375 Winchester?

Paul, there are several aftermarket barrel makers for the T/C. Not sure of the H&H myself, but the .375 JDJ is pretty potent and popular. I "think" it's a .444 Marlin necked down.

Gunmart,
I don't have a real computer. I use WebTV and don't have the capability to post or email pictures.

I have been intending to take a picture and send it to Steve Regwell so that he can post it on his 303 site. As soon as that is done I'll post a link here.

Ashley and Gibbs are supposed to be in cahoots to come up with a Scout package for Enfields. I don't know what the status of that project is.

My rifle uses a #5 action with a surplus 2 groove barrel that I got from Springfield Sporters for $20. The original barrel was trashed and my budget wouldn't allow a custom barrel. I am using a Ram Line stock and a Galco Ching Sling and 5 round butt cuff. The rifle has the ghost ring/micrometer adjustable combination rear sight. Ashley installed one of their scout mounts and a new front sight. I have a Leupold scout scope mounted with Millet rings right now. Warne QD rings are in the works.

The rifle shoots better thatn it has any right to. 3/4 moa with HXP75 Greek surplus ammo. It needs some trigger work but I'm having difficulty finding someone who will do a trigger job. It's a little overweight at 8 lbs. but it handles and shoots very well. It's not a Styer but I really like it. I do need to fire lap the barrel as it retains a lot of copper fouling.

If Gibbs and Ashley come through with their project I think there will be a lot of very happy Enfield owners out there.

Paul, no flame percieved. Check the previous post again. It says he "claimed" to have one. I never saw it, and he was, to put it nicely, prone to exaggeration.
