Early Colt 1903 question

I've come across a 1903 .32 Colt made in 1903. Serial # 10XX
Most of the ones I have either owned or seen have the serial number stamped inside the slide. It doesn't appear to have ever been stamped. The slide looks to be original. Does anyone know if Colt stamped slides this early?

Just a guess but the slide might have been stamped after fitting so the slide and frame could be kept together. The pistol without the slide stamping may have a replacement slide.
