I had thoughts of building a collection of 1911s. Didn't get very far. What's left is a 3xxxxx 1911 with black finish. Have docs tracing it to whom it was issued during WW1. Time for it to find another home. How do I find a good home for it at a fair price?

Condition is everything. Colt's up to about serial number 312,000 would have Colts Brushed Blue finish. From #312,000 to 350,000 they were a mixture of either Brushed Blue or the "Rough Finish" AKA the "Black Army" finish. The Black Army finish was poor and deteriorated rapidly in use. The blue finish in general tends to wear rapidly with use and at this point in time nearly all Brushed Blue and Black Army guns that remained in service have either been refinished or have a very low percentage of original finish left. A very large percentage of them were parkerized in the late 30's through the end of their service life after that process became the standard for refinishing firearms.

As a consequence, there is a large swing in the price of any GI 1911, depending on the amount of original finish left (if still original) or if it has been refinished.
