Dry firing a Marlin lever action?

Nope. And if your safety breaks because of the hammer hitting it, Marlin should fix it without question, since the whole point of the crossbolt safety is to catch the hammer before it hits the firing pin.

Centerfire no, rimfire yes (safety off). With a centerfire even with the safety off there is no harm from dry firing.

Yes, I use to dry fire all the time. I eventually just put in a new firing pin. Use snap caps or something the firing pin can impact on.

I have a pre cross bolt M1894. Dry fired it, until the firing pin broke in several pieces. I replaced the firing pin and don't dry fire it any more.

I really doubt dry firing a cross bolted Marlin would damage much of anything.
