Disassemble Rem 742

Without an exploded-view drawing, don't. About ten years back I partially disassembled mine, and there is a nut at the front of the action which is torqued really tight. Didn't and don't know the spec on it. So, I just put it back together and quit worrying.

I spray gun oil on a patch and rub it around inside the receiver housing. So far, that's been plenty good. (Granting I don't shoot it so often it gets really grunged up inside.)

With the rifle uncocked, you can push out the two pins which hold the trigger group in place, and clean that...
