Difference between duty and belt/paddle holsters?

I am attending the police academy in January. I have elected to retain and use my personal firearm instead of the issued weapon. I would like to know the difference between the styles mentioned and if there is a particular brand to purchase or stay away from. Thank you for your time.

The ONLY holster to consider is the Rogers/Safariland SSIII retention holster. Anything else will get you killed in a grab attack. The belt holsters are generic strap holsters. No security unless you flip them upside down and hang on tightly. The paddle holsters are holsters with a wide paddle hook that slides into your pants. The only thing securing it to you is the paddle. There are spring holsters made in a similar style. A duty holster is several things also. There are drop, swivel, New Jersey, jacket slot, security and flap/thumbbreak/faux snap/Jordan/front or back snap/over hammer/over trigger guard/pnch retention/spring clip open breakfront/clamshell and other styles. Confused yet?
